I’ve finished my post rough draft read through. In the process, I made a number of small tweaks to tighten things up, but nothing truly substantive. I can say I’m actually quite happy with how the draft reads and the story flows—I hardly ever say that about my own writing.
Post read through, I’m at 115,713 words in 525 pages. That includes the back cover text, so ignoring that I’m at 115,586 words in 524 pages
Well, boys and girls, I’ve done it. I’ve finished Chapter 37, “Ghosts of the Future,” the last chapter of “The Second Beast.”
It’s just over 4,000 words in approximately 19 pages.
And it’s done.
You know what they say about the best laid plans of mice and men? (For the record, in this analogy, I’m the men).
Took a week off of work to write and finish “The Second Beast”, only to have a kid get sick and then to have a me get sick
Hello faithful fans. Believe it our not, after nearly four years, there’s actually an end in sight. I’m only two chapters and approximately 26 pages from the end of “The Second Beast.”
My latest chapter, number 35, is entitled “The Quick and the Dead”…
This weekend, I managed to finish not one, but two chapters!
Chapter 33, The Dogs of War, is 3,157 words in 14 pages. Chapter 34, Moving On, is 1,476 words in 7 pages. That means a grand total of 4,633 in 21 pages. I’m now at approximately 106,000 words in 469 pages.
Only three chapters to go, with an estimated 42 pages left
I’ve just finished the 32nd chapter in “The Second Beast,” entitled “Cry Havoc”. It is ten pages and roughly 2,300 words. I can’t say much about the content , as almost any detail would be a major spoiler this close to the end.
Okay, I can say…
Another chapter down, with six more to go. Roughly 2,700 words in twelve new pages. This is an interesting chapter as we bring back a character thought lost, and lose a character we expected to stick with us through the whole damn thing.
You’ve likely learned by now that I’m not the most consistent writer (if you’re even bothering to pay attention anymore). Until I win the lottery or HBO comes through with a surprise millions of dollars for the TV rights to Dead Man’s Tale, my writing will remain something I do in my spare time.
I’m a husband, a father two young girl, and a full time software developer. Spare time is a rare and coveted luxury.
Over the holidays, I was able to carve out some of that luxury.
It’s late and I’m tired, but I’m also very excited. I wanted to share my latest progress with you.
I just completed Chapter 28, Save Our Souls. Like a few other chapters, I’ve renamed this one from what was originally in the outline (Wails in the Night).
It’s 10 pages, 2,295 words. It also means I’ve officially reach the 3/4 point and the second plot point. There are nine more chapters that comprise the thrilling conclusion of The Second Beast.
But now, I’m going to bed.
You didn’t believe me, did you? I mean, I can understand your skepticism. It’s my fault, after all. But I did it.
That’s right, I’ve finished my second chapter in a week, Chapter 27, Every Damn Thing You Love. The original planned title was Stripped of All Masks, but I never really liked that one. I believe the new title fits the chapter better. What do you think?
I’ve just completed Chapter 26, In a Place Like This. It’s 2641 words in 11 pages of Michael Reaper goodness. It has bad jokes, it has mythical creatures, it has tense confrontations, and it has a geeky pop reference or two. It is everything you’ve come to know and love about my writing style.
I know my progress on The Second Beast has been agonizingly slow, but I am making progress and thought I’d share a small treat with you today: the back cover text.

I'm on vacation for the holidays through the end of they year. I'm hoping to get through a couple chapters. Stretch goal is to hit the Second Plot Point (the 3/4 point) before going back to work.
