A new review

Got a great new review from Erica at Fantasy Book Lane. It can be hard for indie authors to get exposure through reviewers, but luckily Erica was willing to review His Name Was Death, and I'm extremely happy with the result. Read her full review below.

Review:

Henry wakes up dead. Sorry, I couldn’t resist. Actually, his old body is dead, but he’s reincarnated as the Grim Reaper. Now he has to ferry soles to the afterlife and search for a killer at the same time.

Like many urban fantasy stories, this one reads a lot like a thriller. There is plenty of fast-paced action but it doesn’t read too fast. What I mean is, the action isn’t non-stop, and it didn’t go by so fast it made my head spin. I enjoyed the pacing of this story, allowing me a well-rounded look at Henry and his companions while he’s on his hunt for a murderer.

There is plenty of comic relief to lighten the mood of the story, which can become very emotional at times. I appreciated the light moments, especially the times when Henry is feeling his way around filling the role he’s been forced into. There is great depth to the scenes where Henry helps a person to cross over. The emotional torment of the people left behind were the strongest scenes of the book. I truly felt something when a soul in agony was finally released from worldly torment. The dramatic effect was certainly well done.

On to a lighter point, I absolutely adored sidekick Elliott. I hate to spoil it, so I suppose I’ll leave it there. Suffice to say, his personality is spot on, and the moments when he acts like what he really is were very amusing. I also enjoyed the Monty Python reference. This is one of those stories that is fun to read, but I wouldn’t call it light. There is serious business going on here, both in the search for the killer and in the job of a Reaper.

I was given a free copy in exchange for an honest review.
